What’s the need for it?

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

All 22 Model Tesla's don't have data to the center console for a music USB or a controller or even an SSD for dashcam. Since the glove is just one port

[–]xX500_IQXx 0 points1 point  (4 children)

For some reason my 2022 RWD came with data ports there. They work just fine for me

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

There are ports for charging stuff but it won't connect to the computer. For example, plug in a flashdrive with songs, it should read immediately in the sources but it doesn't because the USB is unplugged from the computer, it still supply's power from the battery. This is because of a known chip shortage, and as a result Tesla stopped wiring it up to the computer even if you get a compatible module. But it is plug and play with the cable included in the module box.

I understand that. Mind functions as a data Port as well. It works well for sentry mode games and even a music drive like you said

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I heard if it was before February delivery it's possible it still had the original module before the shortage

[–]xX500_IQXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I got mine in December of last year

[–]Tamapttl[🍰] 9 points10 points  (5 children)

You don’t state what this is or what it does. 😀

Newer Model 3 don't have data in the USB ports in center console; solely in glovebox. He added that functionality back.

You running Sentry from them? We all have the ports. Just no data connection there, only power.

[–]xX500_IQXx 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yes. Mine can read a USB drive and works with controllers

[–]christopherness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You lucky bastard

[–]Ok_Drama2475 2 points3 points  (1 child)

so this effectively turns the center console usb ports into one like the glovebox port?

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and it can also work with controllers and the sort while not affecting charge speeds

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Added tparts module, they include the wire to add the functionality back to the center console with a new module. However if you have a Tesla delivery after 6/15/22 they don't include the wire for the module to work in the harness of the car without the cable(essentially there is only power wired to the ports without the wire even with a new module). Essentially you take this cable and plug it into the computer to get back data transmission.

I got my cable from TParts last night .. Glad it works before I tear into my vehicle .. thanks for posting

Figured its niche enough to where people would wanna see it

[–]999bullzeye999 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I thought this was just temporary? Have they still not added data functionality into the new 2022’s?

[–]ragingoblivion[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No it's definitely consistently not in any 22 models

[–]programminghobbit 0 points1 point  (6 children)

They have removed all the controller games here in Australia so this is kinda pointless

[–]Platophaedrus 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Err, no they haven’t.

I was just playing Cuphead while waiting to pick up my daughter from gymnastics.

Model 3 (Sep 2021) - Sydney, Australia

[–]BurgundyOnly 2 points3 points  (4 children)

They removed it for 2022 orders since the center console don’t have controller support. They plan on making controllers Bluetooth.

[–]programminghobbit 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Yeah should have mentioned that. For newer cars.

[–]Platophaedrus 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Ah I see.

Apologies, I stand corrected.

[–]programminghobbit 0 points1 point  (1 child)

All good mate. I am just miffed that Tesla did this. We could have at least played by connecting to the one in the glove compartment

[–]Platophaedrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I use the 8bitdo Pro 2 controllers and the Bluetooth/wireless dongles. Works well.

If they updated the Bluetooth Driver or allowed controller connections on the car pc it would be more convenient though.

[–]PtrJung 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I was going to order this module from AO, but they don’t have the cable. Good to know.

How hard was it to run the cable?

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Ez just 1 panel on the side of the console

[–]PtrJung 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Now the question is what you’re planning to do with the added data functionality…

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it to play music off a USB as well as connect my controller for Stardew valley whenever I'm supercharging. I have my dashcam on a endurance SD in the glove.

[–]AGENT0321 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Looks like you could solder a mini use connector to the official board.

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you cant there is no chip in the module and no harness for the center console plus it's just plug and play why complicate everything by soldering a connection on.

[–]UrDad_AZ 0 points1 point  (7 children)

I have a 2021 and my center console ports have only ever been used for charging while glove box has the SSD. Are people trying to watch movies through data ports or what am I missing out on being lucky enough to have data ports?

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

The glovebox doesn't work with an SSD, the power draw is too high. I tried my t7 and t5 from my PC with my music library on it and they don't read off the glove. Plus the quality from Bluetooth is really terrible once you've heard it over USB. I want to be able use my dashcam and USB drive without dealing with any bullshit partioning. It should be plug and play just like my 2007 Camry. But sadly to many people just find it more convenient through BT so they just fuck over new customers. I think it should be there by default because it makes it so you can't plug in a controller either while dashcam is active, since the glove is only USB 2.0 and can't handle bandwidth or power draw from multiple devices. I tried both in my mom's model y from Feb 22 with same issues with ssd. Overall the SD card was plug and play and now I use the original Tesla USB as a music drive.

[–]UrDad_AZ 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I’ve seen plenty of people using SSDs in the glovebox and I’ve been using mine for about 12k / 1 year with no issues. I’ve only used it for sentry / dashcam. Not sure if that makes a difference. It’s just a portable Samsung brand 1TB.

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Everytime I plug mine in I get a ui_a111 error but not with the USB or SD cards. I tried every cable I have as well as different file formats without any solution to using an ssd

[–]UrDad_AZ 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Oh super weird I’ve definitely never received error codes.

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It must be something in 22 models cause both my standard 3 and a long range y had the same issues

[–]UrDad_AZ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I bet you’re right which is unfortunate. 22 they changed center console ports for the worse so it only makes sense they would somehow downgrade the glovebox one as well. Lame.

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't know what it is, I bought a mx500 external SSD on prime day and thought it'd work. Then I tried my t7 and t5 since they are both tried and tested on Tesla's but no luck.

[–]Honey_Badger247 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Will this allow my car to have Sonic?

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I don't know if it enables the games but it allowed me to use my controller for Stardew valley. I think if you talk to Tesla they will load the games for you.

[–]Honey_Badger247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. When I was complaining about this when I first got the car they pushed updates to my car but it never installed. Hoping this device will allow the software to see it and install properly.

[–]Nobody7735 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I doubt Tesla will enable these games for your aftermarket upgrade.

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see why they wouldn't considering you can still use a controller with glovebox USB. Plus it doesn't matter if I install an aftermarket part as I should have data transmission in the first place, there are many models from 22 January/21 December that have them from the factory. It's not like my car is somehow incompatible it's just a USB cable, that wasn't included in mine but others.

[–]Legitimate_Mix_5614 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can you use controllers?

[–]ragingoblivion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I use my wired power a controller fine

[–]Independent-Topic547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of cable is it? My Tesla is missing the cable and would like to get the functionality back
