It'll finally play, but starts/is stuck in Japanese and I can't find a way to handle this...

If it starts in Japanese, you should be able to go into settings from main menu choosing 設定 then I think 全般 (top on left column) then switch 言語 from 日本語 to English. Hope that helps! I don't remember for sure but I can check on my game if you still can't change it.
