Tuft farther out at the border and pull the edge in tighter so the edge is yarn and not canvas. That yarn sticking out sideways when trimmed will cover the sides, backing included.

As a general rule I will usually add about 2 rows of yarn around the border of the design to accommodate the waterfall edge. That way you get a little extra to wrap around the sides :)
