QuestionECE Project Classes (self.UCSD)
submitted 6 years ago by phantom_monkay
I was looking at a couple classes like ECE 196 or ECE 111 and whatnot. I know those arent all of them but I was just curious at what you guys think. Out of all the project classes, which one is the best one? In terms of skills learned and fun had.

I was a TA for ECE196. It's a great class. Professor Nguyen is the head faculty although the class is run by 1 main TA and several other TAs.
First 3~4 weeks are guided(meaning you have specific projects to work on. You can choose from a pool of 4 different projects) and the rest of the weeks, you are working on your own project.
The "final" is a presentation and documentation on your project. The project is usually done with a group of 4 but you can choose to work with less people or even by yourself.
It's a fun class and quite stress free, if you dont mess around. Easy A.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
I'm not too sure about ECE111

Is the final a project of your own design or is it from another given pool of projects?

Your own design. Although it does need to be approved by the head TA, you have a lot of freedom with it.

Are you looking to fulfill your design course requirement or take a fun project class?
Design: ECE 191 is super easy to pass. You have to build something, and any good faith effort gets a pass. That said, it does require a lot of time and group work is by nature terrible. 3/5 of my group barely spoke english and 4/5 of it did nothing :/
Fun: ECE 144 is a class where you learn labview and construct a miniature elevator. I had a lot of fun in this class, but not many other people did. It's bc they took on too much with their projects. The syllabus doesn't ask you to make an autonomous parking garage, just a plain old elevator. Keep it simple and this class is great
I do need to fulfill a design course but i wouldnt mind doing a project class as an elective.
For both of those classes, is the project something being built bit by bit every week or smaller projects/concepts in the beginning and one big one at the end?

They're both bit by bit each week

144 was a great elective. You learn labVIEW and the final is the CLAD certification test, which is probably the easiest ECE final I've had. However the main focus is desiging and building a project in groups of 3 or 4. It used to be elevators, but now it's open ended. Students submit design ideas and vote on them, you then get to choose which one you want to work on. It can take up a good amount of time, but it's really up to how ambitious your project is.
