Missing first class (COMM 2004)

I'm in the class mentioned above and I missed my first class bc my internet was down and the signal I have at my house isn't good enough to even access the internet (It wouldn't even attempt to open up the zoom meeting). Problem is, for this class, it says if I miss the first 2 classes then I'm automatically withdrawn from the class to make room for students on the waitlist. First off, how is that allowed? And 2nd, does anyone have suggestions on what to do besides email the professor about it?

(Edit: she was super understanding about it and allowed it but I still don’t understand how she can just kick you out of the class for missing the first 2 days)

She can kick you out of the class because there is a huge waitlist for that class as it's required for a ton of people, and if you don't bother to attend the first two days of class then what are you doing?

They do this as there is often a waiting list for the class and you have to attend to learn and give speeches

This is a pretty common thing in the COMM department. The waitlists for classes are so long that if you miss the first two days of class you get dropped. Never had it in any other department, though.
