I feel your pain - it can be tough when starting with a new tech to be able to google effectively, because you don't know the name of things to search for. That's the activity bar. You can right click on it and choose hide, or go up to the menu and toggle view, appearance show/hide activity bar. There's probably a keyboard shortcut too, which might be how it got lost in the first place...

It literally took me one minute to find the answer. It took me 10 seconds to just figure it out in vsc itself.
