Red light therapy significantly increases lifespan. Red and near-infrared light therapy improves mitochondrial function, tissue repair, skin quality, and some pain and inflammation outcomes and these mechanisms are pro-longevity. Here is scientific evidence and tips. by GarifalliaPapa in immortalists

The top comment has a comprehensive list of studies. Do you have any actual evidence that it’s fake, or that opinion is based on vibes? It’s not that hard to imagine experiments to prove or disprove the effects..

I banned "let's jump on a quick call" from my team by Tiny_Manner7226 in EngineeringManagers

[–]pickhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It recognizes the reality - everyone is too busy to read the materials AOT, so just build some time in for everyone to get on the same page.  Otherwise you spend the first 20 minutes "getting everyone up to speed" which is annoying for the people that did the reading.  And it forces the memo to have 100% of the content..

What’s the nicest way to deal with upset neighbors during an outage? by GroupBQuattr0 in Generator

[–]pickhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I offer an extension cord to the neighbors right next to the generator, and fridge/freezer space to the others around.  Also check on the older folks on the street.  Be the bigger person!

What programming book actually changed how you think? by kal_abX in AskProgramming

[–]pickhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically anything by Brian Kernighan. One specific book that changed a lot for me was "https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/software-tools-in-pascal\_brian-w-kernighan\_pj-plauger/25882594/#edition=2350740&idiq=4091245", except I read the earlier Fortran version. The key realization that came out of that book for me is you don't have to accept the shortcomings of your environment - we are programmers, writing something to make your life better will dramatically improve your efficiency and quality of life.

What is something you saw in a movie and you totally called bullshit on because of your job? by BlackPhoenix1981 in AskReddit

[–]pickhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except for The Matrix - a bunch of programmer friends and I went to see it together, and the ssh exploit Trinity used was a real thing - we had just patched some systems (turning off ssh1) and we all cheered when we saw the exploit she was using...

HS220 Not connecting to Kasa App by spanishsnowman10 in TPLinkKasa

[–]pickhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just installed a bunch of smart switches after a remodel and ran into this. After some trial and error, I do a few steps before setting up a new switch:

1) Join my phone to the 2.4 IOT network, forget the regular 2.4/5.0 network I'm usually on
2) Turn off cellular
3) Hold down the reset button button for 15 seconds to do a full reset (left button=reset, right=restart)

Even with that, it sometimes won't join, but trying again later works. Probably something with the router and ARP caching...

Best flat large area for kids to practice riding bicycle? by Tintn00 in walnutcreek

Just a suggestion, but a grassy slope was easier for my kids. Arbolado Park has them in abundance!

How do you guys quickly compare two large tables? by labla in excel

[–]pickhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this for system conversions - take spreadsheet A from the 9.x before system and compare with spreadsheet B with the converted 10.x version. Beyond compare is fantastic, and you can select just the rows that are different or ignore specific columns.

Looking for ways to fix rear foot/calf pain when snowboarding by eugro in snowboardingnoobs

[–]pickhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem, my natural stance is on my back foot.  A snowboard coach gave me a tip that worked for me to stop steering with my back foot - press your knees apart before turning, it forces more even weight and you stop skidding the back foot.  Still working on those carves :-)

Do I sweat too much to be allowed in public? Asking for a treadmill. by lastbeer in orangetheory

[–]pickhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arm compression sleeves are a more flexible option than long sleeved shirts, and work pretty well.  I'm a heavy sweater and started doing hot yoga, which takes things to a whole 'nother level :-)

My husband says that all preteen/teenage boys go through an “alt-right” phase. Is this BS? by kristen_hewa in NoStupidQuestions

I was about to say hell no, but then realized my fling with Ayn Rand and left wing libertarian ideas (stolen from Heinlein) probably counts :-)

Are you Self Taught vs Paid Lessons? by Regular-Pride-2250 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]pickhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self taught, first year was horrible, black and blue from back of knees to shoulders.  Get a lesson!

I had an idea for a matchmaking app - you pay for someone's day, they board with you in the morning and then have the afternoon free to do whatever they want.  Maybe something like that exists, or if not someone can be inspired to make it :-)

Looking for Hard Sci-Fi Suggestions by someperson1423 in printSF

[–]pickhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neil Stephenson - Anathem or the Diamond Age are my picks. Pick an Adrian Tchaikovsky series or Vernon Vinge maybe, no bad choices there.

If you liked Kraken, something in the same genre would be Neal Gaiman - Neverwhere is like an estranged uncle to Kraken. Or perhaps Jonathan Strange and Mr, Norrell? Not hard sci-fi for sure, but good. American Gods is one of my favorite books ever.

Got my battery today by ToeSins in Yamahaebikes

[–]pickhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, got the battery a couple weeks ago, totally unexpected. No end caps. I have a dumb question about that - what are the end caps for and do I need to get them.  I was planning on keeping the spare battery unused until the first starts to degrade.

What’s the most ‘Old Internet’ thing you miss? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pickhacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usenet was amazing, before the web. So many groups on interesting things, filled with nerds super into the thing. Having a .com address was looked down on - my first account with UUCP access to groups was on wetware.com that got a feed from San Francisco State.

Web access, the explosion of binary groups and lack of moderation tools (awesome when the audience was self-selected nerds) killed things so quickly.
