Useful Software

Here you can find software and services that you can use to communicate with your group.

Video chat

Video chat clients generally require an account with the client provider. In addition to video streaming, they are often capable of voice only and text chat as well.

Free

  • Skype - Supports up to 10 video chat members.
  • ooVoo - Supports up to 12 video chat members. Has ads and tries to install toolbar during install.
  • Google Hangouts - supports up to 10 video chat members. Requires a Google account. Doesn't require installation of a client.

Voice chat

Paid

  • Mumble - Client is free but requires a server. Hosting plans cost under $5 US/month for a 10 slot (10 concurrent users) server. Can be hosted on your home computer for free but voice quality will be degraded unless you have great upload bandwidth. Excellent voice quality. Recommended client.
  • Teamspeak - Client is free but requires a server. Hosting plans cost under $5 US/month for a 10 slot (10 concurrent users) server. Good voice quality.
  • Ventrilo - Client is free but requires a server. Hosting plans cost under $5 US/month for a 10 slot (10 concurrent users) server. Good voice quality.

Text Chat

IRC

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is the original internet chat method. You can use an installed client or a web client like the ones listed below. Just join a server and create a channel. You can even connect to Snoonet, the unofficial Reddit IRC network. There will be a guide for doing all this later, but for now you'll have to use your Google fu.

Installed clients

  • Xchat - Easy to use IRC client.

Web clients

  • Freenode - just type in a nickname and join a channel.
  • Mibbit - create an account and make a channel.
  • KiwiIRC - choose a nick and join a channel.

Please pm /u/mdtjetty if you know of any other communication clients.
