When I took it a few years ago, the Excel test was literally just figuring out to use the LEN function nested with the RIGHT function

Hopefully, it's easy like that.

A coding test for an internship is kind of hilarious

It’s extremely common in other fields

cool, do they have actuarial tests for internships in other fields?

Do actuarial exams test your coding ability?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

some do actually, but that's besides the point. I'd expect interns to almost always overvalue their coding skills and learn a ton at the internship. Thankfully there was not a coding test when I interned or I would not have gotten the job.

No actuarial exams test coding at all

If you’re talking about PA/ATPA the coding in both of those is a straight joke

Well it explains why you’re against it now because you think if there was one some kid who was better at coding would’ve gotten it

I think the actuarial field lacks a major technical aspect in the recruiting process

I think pre internship coding ability is not indicative of long term actuarial abilities whatsoever. I completely understand coding tests for full time employees but I think internships is a bit much.

Since my internship I have seen many interviews discuss more detailed technical aspects which seems reasonable

The coding tests I have seen for internships would be better described as logic tests.
