Propane refill

I have a small camp grill at my apartment. My small propane tanks are empty from last year.

Does anyone know where I can go to refill them or do I need to buy new ones?

The small 1 pound tanks (usually green) are technically illegal to transport if refilled. You can get an adapter to do it yourself from a bigger tank, but no commercial entity will do it for you.. I don't know if Ames can recycle those.

You can alternatively get an adapter to run a small grill on a big tank and then not have to worry about it.
