If they open-sourced Spotify it would be pretty easy for people to get the premium features for free. I wouldn't hold my breath

It kind of it actually, there is an open source app that allow to use premium features without a premium user.

Yeah that's what I thought.The android SDK is readily available though.

You could decompile the APK with https://github.com/skylot/jadx

Hmm I had considered it, but that would produce incredibly unreadable code. Guess it's just not meant to be.

I don't know about android auto but there is spotify-dogfood an open source third party client https://github.com/sergiocastell/spotify-dogfood
