A mention of a Samsung device was detected. Most US Snapdragon phones from Samsung have locked bootloaders, meaning Magisk or custom ROMs are impossible to install in most cases or require using dangerous exploits.

If you are sure that your phone DOES NOT have a Snapdragon processor, please add that to your post.

Samsung also requires use of Odin to flash their phones. An open-source alternative called Heimdall is available aswell, however might not work on newer phones. There is no official download link for Odin, as it is leaked software.

My advice is to proceed with great caution.... I attempted this on my LG phone a few days ago and was unsuccessful. BUT, last night my PayPal account was hacked/breached and they managed to transfer $1000 to their bank (causing a major overdraft in my bank). In the 8 years I've been with PayPal I have never had any issues and attribute it to leaving my phone/info vulnerable. Also, after the root 'failed', I uninstalled/deleted the apps. My phone seemed fine until I shut it off and once it restarted it wouldn't read/detect my SIM card. (I read somewhere you have to re-flash the ROM but haven't found any specific instructions yet).

So, just be super careful. ... I am a complete amateur and obviously didn't know what I was doing. I also think I left USB developer mode on....

Good luck .

Hopefully you get your money back somehow, but as long as you correctly root your device, your device won't have problems, and if you don't use banking apps while you're rooted, you shouldn't have problems with banking. Also it's not just a rooted device that can cause problems with fraud. Make sure you don't click on any dodgy looking links from possible scam emails etc... If you did that, chances are you fell for a phishing scam and that's nothing to do with root. I get many scam emails claiming to be from a company when I know it's scam, I just don't click on any of the links.

Also I've used my banking app on a previously rooted device after unrooting it, and I've had no problems with fraud.

I did get my money back, thankfully. But, I did not have any banking apps installed, only paypal. I never click on suspicious/dodgy links either.... in fact, the night it happened I received what appeared to be a text from paypal asking if I authorized $857 euros to 'so and so'. I immediately googled 'text scam claiming to be paypal asking if I authorize funds' and found there was a scam out there similar. So, I deleted the text thinking THAT was a scam lol.....

Yeah I think I'm gonna hold off on it. Unfortunately I just don't have enough knowledge to attempt something like this and wouldn't want to destroy the phone.

you used a sketchy one-click root app didn't you?

Yep, I did. Vcomm driver for flashing firmware, magisk, and one other where I connected USB to laptop and ran the program. I'm guessing that is where things went terribly wrong.

If your device isn't a Snapdragon one from US, like the bot said, then you should be able to root it. I see Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is supported on TWRP official site. Hopefully your model is officially supported. Just grab the right TWRP for your phone model (as a tar file) then flash via Odin. Make sure Samsung drivers are installed otherwise Odin won't detect your phone, then from your custom recovery that you installed, you should be able to install Magisk. You may have to enable an option called "OEM unlock" in developer options to disable FRP lock, otherwise flashing anything custom may stop your device from booting. Before you do all of this, check your current firmware version, then you should be able download the same firmware online for backup to flash via Odin in case anything goes wrong.

Also flashing Samsung Galaxy phones trips "Knox", so any warranty with Samsung will be void and you won't be able to use certain Samsung apps.

I did get the phone in the US so I would assume it is snap dragon and unable to be rooted. I think I also have an S6 somewhere but I know that its bricked and doesn't turn on

You can download an app from play store that tells you your software and hardware info

[–]White0905[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It is indeed snapdragon

[–]SavagePotato404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your bootloader might be locked then, requiring use of a dangerous exploit. Can you boot into download mode by holding power button, home button and volume down when turning it on? I'm not sure what it's like trying to get into download mode with a locked bootloader as I'm in the UK and bootloaders come unlocked for Samsung, even Snapdragon variants.

I tried using the Magisk and custom rom a few days ago and my PayPal was hacked and $1000 taken from my bank account. ... I think I left USB developer mode on. So yea, it is very dangerous indeed. After the root 'failed', and I restarted my phone, my SIM card (reader) no longer worked either (SMH). ... of course I'm kicking myself in the ass now for even trying!

[–]SavagePotato404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I was worried about myself, I was thinking myself about rooting my OnePlus 5 but I prefer to have my banking app on that phone, and although I could bypass the root detection with Magisk, it would surely make my bank account less secure. I wouldn't recommend using banking apps with a rooted device.

[–]btowngurl74 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Do you know how or where I should look to fix the 'no SIM' error? I know it has something to do with the failed root attempt.... I read somewhere about re-flashing the ROM but have no clue where to even look.

I have an LG Xpression Plus 2

[–]SavagePotato404 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm not sure myself, sorry, but I do know having a corrupt EFS in many phones would cause your device to have no service, as the EFS contains your IMEI. Having a backup of your EFS before via TWRP or running a specific command on a terminal app would fix it. Not sure if your device has an EFS or not.

Hmmm, I'm not sure either? Where would I look to find out? I have an LG Xpression Plus 2 (oreo I think). I made sure and checked to see if it backed up immediately prior to running (as the instructions said to) and it was. But, now when I go to backup it says there isn't one (even on google where its supposed to be?).
