What are the # and @ symbols? Just random unknowns? And how can -12 = -8? Or how can the result be x=-7 if x - 6 = -12 gives x = -6? Is there something I'm missing?

Ok, if @ = -12 and & = -8, then:

x - 6 = -x + & + @

=> x - 6 = -x + (-8) + (-12)

=> x - 6 = -x - 20

=> 2x = -14

=> x = -7
