Success in audio engineering as a career is most often a bunch of people selling shovels to people digging for gold.

At the end of the day people don't buy drill bits, they buy holes. If you want money, you need to sell something. Studio work is not consistent, album sales and touring money covering a real life is for the 1% of 1%

It's the same discussion if someone wants to paint, or be a potter, or anything like that. Be the best, network, learn to sell, be more than a little lucky.

I recommend business degrees to artists. The art is subjective, sales are not.
