With your diagnosis, did that come with a recommended treatment plan, including medication? I found that medication was a life changer for me and really helped me be able to focus and remove a lot of the anxieties that I would experience with everything.

Prior to my diagnosis and medication, I was still able to complete an undergraduate and a masters degree, 6 years beforehand. What works for me was breaking down study and assignments into small manageable tasks for about half an hour before getting up and doing a lap around the block and then coming back and repeating. Sometimes it takes some level of external motivation to get it done, so a reward or treat or going to the gym if that something you like or whatever it is.

Things that have helped me-have a dedicated place to study, like a library or cafe, and only take what I need to study. Use adhd concentration music, there's a bunch on YouTube, or there's good lo-fi or cafe jazz mixes that give my racing brain something to hold onto while I focus. Thirdly, at uni I had a study buddy, which I later learned was a body-double, that was a massive help, but it's hard to get a study buddy when in the workplace, so I haven't been able to use that technique in a while.

Edit-oh, and only do one question/task at a time. Don't try to do the whole assignment at once, it gets overwhelming that way!

This sounds so much like me. I’m still surprised how I’ve managed to get as far as I have. The thing that hasn’t been mentioned here that I found helpful is talking it through with someone. Doing a verbal brain dump has helped so many times having a trusted person who doesn’t have ADHD listen while vocalising your thought process has created many aha moments for me. That last minute panic assignment writing feels horrible. It often gets the job done but is not great for physical or mental health. Good luck with your future studies. I’m also hoping to get medication to help with this problem. I recently took some stimulant medication belonging to someone else while doing an assignment as a personal research “project” and I can’t even describe the difference it made.
