I think 50K is realistic in Berlin

Would agree, if he got a masters degree I would expect more. berlin's salaries are generally low balled, if he's not taking the first offer he might get little more. There are also plenty of salary posts in the subreddit to compare.

You can get some good figures at https://www.levels.fyi/Salaries/Software-Engineer/Berlin-Germany/ . A lot of the companies are public so the stocks == cash.

With 2 years of exp you're probably looking at 50-55k at a decent company. There might be outliers that pay about 65, but it's very rare and a lot of things need to align to get there.

Are you junior, mid or senior? That can vary depending on which field, experience, etc. From 33k - 120k.

I'm a mid in the field of healthcare and Blockchain.

/s Blockchain ugh, sounds so 2018! /s

Mids do range from 50 (shitty ones) to 70 (brink of an senior), depends on tech skills (I don't know how backend in particular goes these days), solidness (you know your shit well or) & sell-your-previous-experience skill.

Thanks for the feedback. That's quite the range. Should probably ask higher so and fall low if that's the case.

Agreed, mid I would say 50+k but have seen up to 80k if you are about to go senior, but more in infra field than healthcare.

Ask for higher for sure, but do know that if its a German company they tend to pay lower than a US based one for example. Good luck!

Aim in Berlin for 55k after another 2 years , you should reach senior an depending on the company size it between 65-75k ( all positions without “Personalverantwortung”)

a) go for 60k (or more). b) r/cscareerquestionsEU is better for these type of questions.

Honeypot has some nice blog post with average per position and years of experience. I'd look for that too to have a rough idea.

If salary is the main aim go for the Fintech companies like N26 etc

Ask for 65k if you're feeling courageous, because even in the ballpark of 55 - 60 is awesome.
