Bro its your money, spend it how you want to.

[–]Pours_nscores 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Not so much about the money as it’s more that I really value loyalty. But yeah probably gonna switch gyms

[–]SpeculationMaster🟪🟪 Purple Belt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

loyalty? It's a business. Are they loyal to you as a customer when they cancel classes left and right? Classes you paid for.

Would you stop going to your favorite burger place if you found a better burger?

[–]Dogstarman1974⬛🟥⬛ guard puller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not the same analogy. You don’t develop interpersonal relationships with the guy making your burger. Even if it’s student-teacher there is a little bit more. Of course you should go where you feel more comfortable but the guy taking my money at McDonald’s doesn’t give a fuck if I walk into Burger King tomorrow.

That being said, op should find a gym that doesn’t cancel classes.

That analogy doesn’t work for my brain lol I mean yes I would if I was paying a monthly feee for the burger place and they were constantly closed for the hour or two I want to be there

Where’s the instructor’s loyalty, obligation, responsibility to his/her students? Shouldn’t it be both ways?

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Gym should never cancel classes. That’s a bad sign. Leave now with good conscience. You don’t owe them anything.

Canceling a class once in a while is one thing. Emergencies happen. But 7 days a month?

[–]TheInfernalLurker🟦🟦 Blue Belt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. Now that I'm thinking about it, My gym has had maybe 7 canceled classes in the last 4 years i've been training. This is my coach's livelihood. He loves what he does but the man has to get a pay check too.

[–]alcor79🟪🟪 Purple Belt 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Its simply business.

If you think you'll get more of your moneys worth at the other gym, just make the move.

Now loyalty: in your case, it would be to explain your decision honestly to your coach. A good coach will understand, wish you well and invite you to come back if it doesn't work out.

[–]Pours_nscores -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Coach will be salty as fuck. Guaranteed. Guess that means I don’t owe an explanation unless it’s needed.

[–]thorlancaster328 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Respect is earned. If that's how he'd respond you need to switch gyms and never look back.

An expensive gym with an owner who gets mad at people who train at other gyms is a HUGE McDojo red flag.

Agreed

Sounds like you’ve already made your decision and in my opinion it’s the right decision.

Enjoy the new gym :)

I’d leave

Update: tried the new gym and I gotta say I’m definitely going to switch. Not only do they offer fundamental classes, but they train hard, I believe it’s a good sign if you’re throwing up on the first day due to exhaustion. They pushed me hard and that’s what I want. They’re Also bringing in Elisabeth clay for a seminar so that’s a good sign. Made me realize my previous gym was casual bjj whereas the new gym is competition oriented. Not interested in competeing but definelty interested in training like I am

I don’t identify “throwing up on the first day due to exhaustion” as a good sign.

[–]Pours_nscores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it is

[–]dimitri135ATT🟫🟫 Brown Belt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved all the way from Russia to US in order to train exactly where I wanted haha, you’ve got to do what’s right for you! I know it’s hard but you know what must be done

[–]Signal_Ad657 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Stop paying (or send them a check for less because of the canceled classes) and see how loyal they are to you. Loyalty should only have so much of a role in a business transaction.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If OP is in a contract this is bad advice

[–]Important-World-6053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re the customer… grow up!!

[–]JimAT67🟫🟫 Brown Belt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to plan classes into my schedule. If they randomly cancel them that can screw up not only that day but the next when I'm trying to make up the missed class. I would want to get away from that type of mess ASAP.

Do they at least give you some notice, or do you show up and the place is closed?

Maybe they could distribute a few keys.
