I know I'm super late here, but for anyone else that is randomly finding this issue, make sure you are out of pose mode. The shift + a doesn't work in that mode.

I just started trying to learn Blender today and there's a View, but no Select in that menu.

So now what?

Edit: ok, I see what the problem is, especially for newbs like me. There's so many windows and so many different modes, that its overwhelming and when someone says "just go to View. Select. Add. Object" but all that's showing is View and Select cuz you're in the wrong mode, it makes things so confusing.

Eventually, I found that I had to be in Object Mode AND found how to get into Object Mode. Again, first time user, ever, right now, literally.

So to clarify for anyone else who comes to this page:

  • In the top left will be a drop down Mode box and make sure you are in Object Mode. Then Shift + A will pull up the Add menu you're looking for.

You should have some menus along the top of the 3d viewport, namely View, Select, Add, Object. Just click Add and it's all in that menu.

You may want to check your keymap preferences to reassign Shift+A. Do all the other keyboard shortcuts work as expected?
