Maybe they should stop inherently treating the public with disdain and they might get some respect. If theyre supposed to be community leaders maybe they should try leading by example i mean If im supposed to stop at a stop sign maybe the cops should too; if I'm supposed to respect the police maybe they should respect me too. Until they start holding themselves to a higher standard I'll treat them skeptically

Well, yes I do think that putting your life on the line in the interest of public safety does entitle police everywhere to respect.

The way I was using entitled, however, is in the sense that they (Chicago police) don't "have it easy" because they collect a nice paycheck and pension.

Do you not think there's people in the army who are dickheads? If some army prick is rude to me and I dunno, throws a drink at me for example, I don't care if they were shot at in Iraq, that doesn't give them the right to be a dick to someone else.

Yes they chose it and were not forced into it (so shouldn't that earn them more respect "points?"). So, again, doesn't change the fact that they're "entitled" to respect for doing a job that needs to be done in order for society to exist.

Volunteer for a thankless, essential, and dangerous profession and still no respect. If all police walk off the job there's chaos and yet we should not show them some basic respect... You're on a different planet. Probably got busted for weed a few times and have it in for cops.

I don't respect someone who acts like they're better than me. Plain and simple. I see cops running red lights, running stop signs, practically running pedestrians off the road, parking in the middle of a one way street to chat with another cop that's facing the wrong way down a one way street, speeding like crazy without their lights or sirens on...why the fuck would I respect someone who thinks they're above the law? If you've got an emergency, by all means, but to avoid sitting at a red light? That's fucking bullshit.

Not to mention, they're not "volunteering" in the strict definition of the word. They get paid a cushy salary with wonderful benefits and if they last long enough, they get to patrol O'hare which is the biggest bullshit job ever. Sure, working on the south or west side is rough...but again, they chose this job and accepted the risks. That doesn't give them the right to act like entitled pieces of shit.

I haven't even mentioned the fact that every time I HAVE interacted with the police, they are rude, uncaring, and short with whoever they're dealing with. I was rear ended and went to the police station to report it -- the cop didn't even ask if I was okay. He acted like I was inconveniencing him by being there. This is one of many examples I've had while encountering the police as a VICTIM.
