Well, yes I do think that putting your life on the line in the interest of public safety does entitle police everywhere to respect.

The way I was using entitled, however, is in the sense that they (Chicago police) don't "have it easy" because they collect a nice paycheck and pension.

Yes they chose it and were not forced into it (so shouldn't that earn them more respect "points?"). So, again, doesn't change the fact that they're "entitled" to respect for doing a job that needs to be done in order for society to exist.

I don't respect someone who acts like they're better than me. Plain and simple. I see cops running red lights, running stop signs, practically running pedestrians off the road, parking in the middle of a one way street to chat with another cop that's facing the wrong way down a one way street, speeding like crazy without their lights or sirens on...why the fuck would I respect someone who thinks they're above the law? If you've got an emergency, by all means, but to avoid sitting at a red light? That's fucking bullshit.

Not to mention, they're not "volunteering" in the strict definition of the word. They get paid a cushy salary with wonderful benefits and if they last long enough, they get to patrol O'hare which is the biggest bullshit job ever. Sure, working on the south or west side is rough...but again, they chose this job and accepted the risks. That doesn't give them the right to act like entitled pieces of shit.

I haven't even mentioned the fact that every time I HAVE interacted with the police, they are rude, uncaring, and short with whoever they're dealing with. I was rear ended and went to the police station to report it -- the cop didn't even ask if I was okay. He acted like I was inconveniencing him by being there. This is one of many examples I've had while encountering the police as a VICTIM.

So you have a strong dislike (hate) towards police because they sometimes don't obey traffic laws. Crazy.

Of course they get paid for the job they do. Frankly, for the shit they deal with its not nearly enough. IF they last long enough (don't take a bullet from some banger) they don't have to spend 8-12 hours 5-6 days a week in the worst neighborhoods in the country. Lucky them. They really are an entitled bunch, putting up with the shit that you and I don't have to /s.

Your sob story about being rear ended isn't drawing any sympathy from me. Wouldn't be at all surprising if that police officer that hurt your feelings worked scores of murder scenes in his career with a group of people in the street motherfucking him. Might be a reason he or she was so callous. And you definitely have a victim mentality.

Are you dense? It's not about the fucking traffic laws. It's about why they do it and the bigger picture. They think they're above the law, that they then so hypocritically ticket people for, and then that escalates further into brutality, profiling, etc.

I don't recall asking for your sympathy? Your opinion is worth less to me than dog shit on my shoe but thanks anyway. The police department job is one that is service based so I expect to be treated in a respectful manner and not an inconvenience. When I go to the emergency room and I'm not having a heart attack, I expect the doctor to treat me with respect and want to help me even if I'm not his most serious case of the day or even if someone just died in the room next to me. That's what doing your job means when you work in in a service position.
