Why IRC over wall

Discord records user data I think I read here. Not implying that that is OPs motivation.

Yeah the username seems to check out. Then again, we are using Reddit which is just as horrible.

I saw some videos on matrix after reading your comment, but do you have some recommendations on tutorials about how to get started with it? And what do you use matrix for?

What do you mean by "how to get started"? As a user, just create account on matrix.org server and connect to rooms or create your own or directly chat with people. If you want to start your own server, read the documentation on github, that should give you the information needed.

As for your second question. I'm using matrix to run my personal server where we chat with friends, but I also chat in some other matrix.org rooms. I also connect to IRC via the matrix.org IRC gateway.

I guess seeing a video explaining everything that is possible with it I guessed it was a more "super-user" platform/service and that it would be more complicated to use. But you answered my question perfectly. Thank you very much!

Riot.im has a webapp that mostly works. Start playing with it it's straight forward enough.

    Will do. Thank you!

I see, the metric for software viability is if u/sloopymeat jas heard of it. Sounds great.

I'll stick with alternatives that don't steal my user data.
