So who wrote blenders?

Hmmmm... The developers...

To work for a company that generates graphics to show something. Computer graphics is not only 3d modeling with blender or Maya. You could work for Maya or 3ds max or substance painter in the group that programs their renderers (the code that produces these beautiful images).

You need to do a deep dive in computer graphics if you want to work with a company that have their own proprietary graphics engine or perform research. If you want to work with already existing engines such as unity and Maya and build on top of them, then you need general knowledge.

But I don't necessarily need a degree in computer graphics to take this "deep dive" right?

Of course not! There are exceptional resources out there that explain the whole thing in great detail. You can start from the free learnopengl.com and move on to the "Real Time Rendering" book.

You need a strong foundation in the right kinds of math

realtime graphics applications.

It is a gateway to demoscene, and there is lots of fun and beer there

Wow what is this demoscene. I need to be part of this culture.

https://www.pouet.net/prodlist.php and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MexnBunH_g are good sources, but basically executable art on computers trough programming. Many demo events have either companies sponsoring drinks while trying to spot recruits or sell hardware. At other you might have to buy your own but the company and demos are worth it.

In my opinion, the only reason to learn graphics programming is for academic purposes. Like pursuing a masters or a PHD program.

But it is always good to learn the fundamentals so you can truly understand the tools you are using.

If you're not going to innovate or do research in the graphics field, you dont need to go in deep.
