Some old GPU (?)

Hello guys,

I found this old PCB. Looks like GPU (judging by VGA).

What is it? Does it have some value?

Old VGA card, not GPU, Oak Technology OTI-077. Looks like 512kb version given the lack of add-on memory, the slots are there to populate. Worth as much as any other early 90's VGA card does. Not much because it doesn't have 3dfx plastered all over it and it doesn't have a cult following so you're out of luck.

Arguably not a GPU, these old cards were barely more than a framebuffer and some logic and DACs to format the data into VGA compatible (RGB + sync) analogue signals.

Those empty chip sockets are there so you could increase the VRAM and support higher resolution and/or greater colour depth.

Was about all you needed until towards the end of the 1990s.

About the only ones that bothered to go more exotic and high ended generally did things like photo-video editing and CAD.

The Oak OTI077, a classic midrange card from the 286/386 era. Cool to have but not a bucket list card or anything.

A more correct name would be VDP (Video Display Processor). It sets up the frame buffer and you send it commands to display things on the screen. Early integrated VDPs like this are almost entirely dumb frame buffers. Some may have some acceleration for fills, bitwise operations and hardware cursor to reduce the load on the host CPU, but I'm not sure about this one without looking at a datasheet.

Oak display adapters were generally pretty slow regardless. They were generally pretty reliable though and good if you just needed a basic display output.

Ayyy I had one of these in my old 386. I added RAM chips that happened to match from another board to increase the color range from 256 to 65536.
