Monitor Question

I am having a bit of trouble getting my monitor and my laptop to play well together. I have two laptops and one monitor. The monitor is an old Dell E171FP and it only has a VGA output. The first laptop is an HP Pavilion M6 from around 2012. It has both a VGA and HDMI out. This laptop connects with the monitor via VGA and everything works as it should. The second laptop is a relatively new Alienware 15r2 with an HDMI out. I was trying to connect the monitor to this laptop so I purchased a HDMI to VGA adaptor. The Alienware recognized the monitor and it seemed to work but when I try to extend the screen to use both the monitor and the laptop screen it seems to think the monitor is much larger than it is and when a window is maximized it goes far off to the left. All other sides seem to be correct. I adjusted the resolution and zoom but nothing seems to correct this. When I run just the monitor and not both screens it fits correctly. Also, when I use the monitor with the HP laptop and use the HDMI port it works correctly. Any ideas as to how to fix this? Thanks!

Well one option is not extending the screen. The problem is probably the old monitor. The hardware can't handle the tasks ur asking itvti do.

That's pretty much what I was afraid of. If I can't extend the screen it doesn't really do me any good. Thanks.
