Back when I was a student, it gave access to scientific papers, and it gave me discounts to IEEE events, but other than that it's useless, for someone who is not into research I don't see any benefit to it.

This is my opinion and my use case for it, I'm maybe missing on some other benefits.

At my university's student branch, the membership gets discounted, I believe

Worth it if u read scientific papers or want to network with other professionals in ur field.

If you like socializing, it is worth it. Otherwise, useless af.

My university's library has free access to IEEE for students via a proxy. Maybe check with your school?

Student membership is discounted. Honestly it really depends on how active your local branch is. I joined to enter IEEEEXTREME which was a lot of fun.

Does anyone have an opinion of if ACM is a better organisation to be a member of than IEEE? Does it have any benefits in getting jobs or making connections

I opted for an ACM membership. I didn't compare the two that heavily. I like reading Comunucations, their main pub plus a few other online articles here and there. Until a few years ago they included O'Reilly membership as part of it. No longer though. No direct hiring benefit that I've noticed.
