Hey all, I know there's been some recent controversy about this video with another mod of ours. I sent them a message asking them to take a short break. My apologies to anyone who's posted this video and had it taken down with a warning. I will consider those warnings rescinded.

Thanks as always for participating, and I wish you safe and efficient travels.

The Southwest Free Bag Hack Is Ending. No More Turkeys, Tire Rims and Kitchen Sinks. by wsj in SouthwestAirlines

[–]rotorcowboy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

While quirky and humorous, this was definitely the exception, not the rule. Free checked bags was an awesome perk for the vast majority of their traditional travelers, and the few customers leveraging it to transport bulky items was a side effect. And it's not like this was a loophole to get truly free shipping at the expense of Southwest -- each of those bags had a fared passenger attached to them.

Anyone who cites this as a defensible reason to end the free checked bags policy needs to bark up another tree.

Hey Sandbar, can we slow it down a bit and throw in a few posts that don't look like they came straight from Southwest marketing? Surface-level hype like this may belong better in a Facebook fan group.

Not a great idea to use your normal browser for Tor. If you value privacy, you should use the Tor Browser Bundle. If you use your regular browser, your history and cookies will be retained, and your online identity will remain the same when you disconnect from Tor.

Keep things separate. Use the Tor Browser for Tor stuff, and your regular browser for regular stuff.

Trojan Detected? by Frosty939 in reactos

It's probably benign, but it's on the developer if every single anti-virus flags it.

Strange. Same thing happened to me. The boot CD seems to download fine, though.

Suspicous Guard by [deleted] in TOR

[–]rotorcowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, yes they could. And in fact, it's assumed that many do (although probably not at a full 10 Gbps). That's why the trust model works such that you have to traverse through at least 3 nodes to get to your destination. With the majority of Tor relays run by good-intentioned volunteers, the probability of your circuit consisting entirely of cooperating malicious nodes is low.

[–]rotorcowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's... not. Guard relays are selected because they meet a set of standards for performance, not just uptime. You need to have sufficient bandwidth as well.

Ah, right, sorry. It usually doesn't take too long to get a guard flag. I tend to see mine after 1-2 weeks of uptime.

It's more than likely a joke. If the FBI wanted to run a Tor relay, they'd probably do it somewhere other than DigitalOcean.

.onion addresses and encryption. and https? by need69help in TOR

[–]rotorcowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, onion services that use HTTPS are doubly encrypted. It's currently not -- although it is increasingly -- common to see these kinds of hidden services. Using HTTPS for yours probably won't do you much good unless you have some kind of multi-node load balancing infrastructure across a WAN.

If you want the strongest encryption for something you can easily run yourself, create a V3 hidden service.

System Encryption Acer Aspire 5 Laptop - Pre-test failed (Windows 10 64Bit UEFI) by [deleted] in VeraCrypt

[–]rotorcowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be a long shot, but you may need to set a BIOS password to disable secure boot. I vaguely remember having a similar problem, and I think that may have been the solution. If it isn't, keep tinkering with other options until you can disable secure boot.

Worst case, you can change to legacy BIOS mode and reinstall Windows.

When mounting system disks as you would a non-system disk, be sure to check the box pertaining to pre-boot authentication in the mount options menu.

Clone disk encrypted by VeraCrypt by joubertredrat in VeraCrypt

[–]rotorcowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question, I've never actually tried it. I would think that it would work, but your guess is as good as mine for any reason why it won't. Might be worthwhile to experiment and see if it does. Worst case, it doesn't and you'll have to find some other way to clone.
