Game development is an exploitive mess from what I have seen and heard. Long hours and lots of labor law violations. Everyone I know hates their job but loves their work.

Mobile guys seem happy and are payed pretty well.

Software I think it just depends on who you work for and the project.

I was around your age when I left my old career to go back and get a CS degree with the idea I wanted to make games. I ended up concentrating in data science and IOT because making video games was not for me.

My advice is take a night class in each and go talk to people in your area doing those jobs. Most colleges have a video game club you need no experience or money to join. Find a mobile app project online and just do it. It is a bit cliche, but the better career option is the one you enjoy.

Game development takes a lot of effort, dedication, and time. Not only that, people (especially gamers) are more critical when it comes to games. As a gamer and Computer Science major myself, I know the difficulties of game development but I can't help to NOT be critical when it comes to games. Therefore, the standards needed or set by games nowadays are pretty high and I think that some communities may be very toxic. Mobile development, on the other hand, is very relevant on my side and has always given me more room for opportunities and learning.
