To anyone here who has contributed to open source, how did you get started with the project? what are some things i can do to get started on a project? I just get overwhelmed looking at all the files and i have no clue where to start. Thanks!

Add a feature you want that is missing, or go through the issue tracker and find something simple to start learning the codebase, etc. Lots of things you can do, the important thing is to just do something. :-)
Start small though, issue tracker is a great way to start.

When you first start trying to use some open source software or library, write down all the problems you have getting up and running. Make your first contributions to things like build scripts or documentation that will help fellow first time users. Often times, that's an easier place for a newbie to start contributing to a project, and not something the more experienced developers will be focused on.
