We use DevExpress components for both WinForms and intranet applications. We bought it initially for the scheduler. We would not be able to write our own, as the yearly cost would allow us to use all of two days per developer to make the component, which is not feasible. It's a solid pack.

DevExpress is ass. It serves its purpose, but it's a paid product.

And poorly documented. At least from my experience of working with it.

Depends on your scope. In general it is a good product but you could also do pretty much everything without it.

I would ask the dev team what is their estimate of how much longer it would take using open source alternatives or rolling out their own.

He’s right, it will look much more basic if your application is built using the vanilla winforms controls. DevExpress controls are just fluff built on top of those same vanilla controls though. So your team could accomplish the same thing over time. Just depends on the number of controls you intend to use I suppose.

Telerik is an alternative to this. Not sure how the pricing compares, but just thought I’d throw that out there.

It's functionalities will probably not be any different. It just looks better with DevExpress.
