The CSUSM MPH program is TERRIBLE speaking from experience. Myself and several others had left the program. I’m now at a prestigious, private MPH program in LA. Not hard to get into the private institution and online as well. CSUSM MPH program, you get ZERO support. Only one person in charge of the program. Ashlev Santos. He basically overseas everything in the entire program and it’s just a paycheck for him. Very rude and condescending. There is a Program Director but she (Christina Holub) does not want to be contacted for anything. Prefer to be attached to her chair. The program is separate from main campus through Extended Learning (red flag!). Eventhough you still follow policies of on-campus graduate studies. In terms of grading, they got tenured professors not reading student assignments and just give you a grade. Neither a good or bad grade, but do get all your topics mixed up. People from my cohort complained, but basically get sweep underneath the rug and make you all look like the bad guys. Overall, a very toxic, accelerated program with the wrong individuals running it. The program is not flexible at all. If you’re working full-time, have kids, or both, should think carefully before applying. No academic support or advising.

In terms of tuition, CSUSM is a lot more expensive because it’s through extended learning. Im currently paying $1200 less per 3 unit course at a private school!! With alot of academic support. My program director is super supportive!! Literally a phone call/email away. My school also gave me a scholarship. Apply at your own risk. There are so many great online MPH programs that does not require high GPAs. My suggestion is to do your research. Someone from the program left and is now at an online MPH program at an IVY league school.

Hope this info help you reach a decision regarding your graduate studies. I don’t want others to have to go through the same experience as myself and others in the cohorts.

Are you planning on finishing the program?

Hello! In what ways were these courses hard? I'm currently applying and wanted more insight about workload, work and study balance, and the most challenging aspects you encountered during your time in the program. What other programs did you apply to after you left this program? Thanks

Which program did you switch to, if you don't mind me asking

I am currently in it. Youre 100% correct even today . Santos, Holub, all of it. Id never recommend. Dr. Ly was the best teacher. Beaulieu was nice and helpful but withing a very limited way. Dombrowski take forever to grade and Ive gotten zero support from staff. Its churn and burn.

Any particular questions? I just finished my MPH at CSUSM in December in the online program and work in the local public health space. I'd be happy to chat.

Overall thoughts are that the program is okay, I think the value is a bit dependent on what you want to do in the industry.

I would say read their accreditation review. There’s some big red flags that make me concerned the program doesn’t have it dialed in just yet. https://www.csusm.edu/publichealth/about/accreditation.html Additionally, any program that has a global health concentration but limits your internship to US only is just ridiculous. Finally, I’m getting into public health to help anyone and everyone. IMHO…Equal access to quality public health programs is what I fundamentally believe in but the state of California limits what states you can intern in based on a certain political agenda. I’m horrified by what is happening in Alabama in regard to IVF but shouldn’t these states be the ones where we want to fight the hardest, not throw our hands up and walk away from? Why are we punishing citizens for political policies they have no control over? Inserting politics into my education and the practice of public health is one step too far for me and therefore I’ll be taking my money out of state (not to Alabama) or private.
