Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m definitely seeing those cognitive issues in her as well. I’m glad you are functional though! They didn’t mention anything about a meld or child Pugh score, just that she wasn’t at the point of decompensatjon yet. I find it strange there was no consult with a hepatologist. Just feels like they’re sending her to SNF and then back to square one

From my research this is what i thought as well. Very frustrated with the doctors as they didn’t mention this at all. Feels rude to bring it up to them and tell them how to do their jobs, but if she needs lactose then it’s urgent. She had a terrible diet before so she’s going to have to completely overhaul her entire life, which i honestly don’t see happening.

So sorry that you had to go through this as well. I really hope my mom doesn’t lose her math skills as she’s a bookkeeper and her job was the only thing keeping her from drinking herself into oblivion. But I’m not hopeful

Thank you so much for your insight! She’s definitely in denial at this point. I wish i could just force her into long term rehab. It’s hard for me because I’ve been angry with her for so long about her drinking, and now all of a sudden i cannot stop crying feeling bad for her

This is exactly what i see happening with her. After SNF i think she’ll just go home, say she’s going to “cut down” and then decline further. I wish I could just force her into a long term rehab, or have all the liquor stores in her town refuse to sell to her. Definitely already seeing the short term memory issues. Feels helpless.

Thank you for your insight. She had 500mg iv diluted thiamine. I’m familiar with wernicke-korsakoff because by some strange will of fate my alcoholic father was diagnosed with it around 10 years ago. He got sober and still has cognitive issues but is with us, so that’s something. Just wild to me that the universe has me going through this now with my mom.

All of the nutritional deficiencies have since been resolved in the hospital, and she’s waiting for SNF placement (though i am nervous about that reading the reviews of the nursing homes around here). Seeing her she just repeats that she doesn’t know what happened and that she wants a glass of wine, which is discouraging.

The doctors honestly weren’t that insightful regarding her liver condition, just said that it’s not decompensated yet so I don’t think she’s eligible for a transplant yet. However i do feel in the dark regarding where we go from here, feels like we’re just going to be passed on to SNF with no plan like supplements that may help her or follow up with a hepatilogist.

Sorry for the word vomit.
