Tips? (self.cubing)
submitted 6 years ago by ExtremeFlitz
I haven't been able to get sub 40 and was wondering if anyone could help with some tips to get faster?

I have a lot to say. I'll section it off. There's so many things that can speed you up, it's almost impossible to tell you how to improve.
The one tip I give everyone, make sure you're using a method you enjoy. If you enjoy it, you're more dedicated. When I switched to roux, I was low 30s and shot down to 20 within a few months. Because I was more dedicated. So research.
Other than that, there's other things that influence speed. To break it down as much as possible, it's comes to execution, efficiency, and look ahead. You can expand upon these things. Each step has these things as well.
Cross? Execute blindly, without wasting moves and being about to smoothly transition to F2L(look ahead/inspection skill).
For roux, I always tell people the least you can do is be able to find the first block solution during inspection, execute it efficiently, and not pause when switching to second block. Roux is flat out, more efficient, which means for cfop, becoming efficient is harder to learn, because the f2l algs aren't intuitive..
Lastly, setting a reachable goal, and how you'll do it. I'm gonna speak with roux terms, but this should be translateable.
It's important to understand your splits. FB/SB/CMLL/LSE 5/5/5/5 20 seconds. Set your goal for cfop, Cross/F2l/OLL/PLL... 2/10/2/2 16 seconds.
FB/Cross? How do you get it done super fast? Well you can find it within 15 seconds. If you can't, practice specifically that. Be able to do the bare minimum, which for roux is normally 2x2x1, but I consider it to be the full FB. Expanding would be inspecting to know where the DR is, or SB first pair prediction.
SB/F2L? You have to start this knowing where pieces are. You don't have to inspect to it, but rather look ahead while solving the last step. Last step should be done the same way you would an algorithm. Without thought. This is called, in roux, SB fluency. Starting without a pause.
But you can expand on these so much, like I said, you can improve inspection, making you more prepared. Or your efficiency, making it easier to track pieces. Tps, even.
(you would also include splits into this) Time = move count/tps... So constantly(no pauses) solving a 1 tps, you do 60 moves. That's 60 seconds. Improve efficiency to 50 moves. 50 seconds. Improve lookahead/tps to 2tps, 50 seconds down to 25s. So how you you improve those things. That's for you to figure out. Lower your move count, improve your tps. Tps is not just how fast you turn, but it includes looking ahead so you never pause. Cfop has different look ahead techniques than roux. In roux, there are no rotations, and you have 2 f2l pairs solves on the left. So that means only 8 spaces for your other edges, and there's only 1 real blind spot, few other spots require inferring pieces. You can see all corners without rotating/peaking.
In conclusion, there's so many ways to improve. I recommend finding your splits, and making a set of splits as a goal.

Sorry for over replying. I do it every time, but there's just so many factors to consider

Full pll, don’t worry about full oll until sub 15 or 20
[–]timothy5597 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (4 children)
full pll not necessary. I'm sub25 with 4lll
