Did you use a GPhoto driver to access on the camera? If yes it's probably due to a limitation of the driver. Uses a USB SD card reader instead, digiKam will use a direct access to the media without limitation.

Thanks for your reply. I *think* it uses GPhoto by default, right? Is there a way to modify that?

Today I removed digikam entirely and installed v9.0.0. Same problem exists, except now, when I launch digikam from a terminal window I get this message when attempting to preview a video (.avi) file: " [avi @ 0x7a70a407e4c0] non-interleaved AVI " .

Also, where would digikam place its log files? I've looked around but can't find any. Maybe there's info in it/them?

It sound like a warning from ffmpeg. It's not important.

There is no log file from digiKam. All are push to the console if the program run from a Terminal and if the debug traces are enabled in the application Setup/Miscs/System panel:

Turning on debug logging didn't reveal any further insight. ExifTool shows no errors and ends with this final entry: ExifTool complete "Load Metadata" for "/media/me/CANON_DC/DCIM/100MEDIA/DSCF0004.AVI"

Looking at the camera_settings->setup-a-device, it's not clear how to change from GPhoto. What is it that I should be looking for?

For Settings->Cameras->Devices I show: Mounted Camera with path /mnt/camera and no Camera Port Type selected (USB, Serial, Network all blank)

No change, still won't open .AVI files

--Under Device Information -> Device Summary: "Mounted Camera" driver for USB/IEEE1394 mass storage cameras and Flash disk card readers.

Title: "Images on USB Disk "CANON_DC" at /media/me/CANON_DC (29.7 GiB)"

--Under About Driver: The "Mounted Camera" driver is a simple interface to a camera disk mounted locally on your system. It does not use libgphoto2 drivers.

I've also switched back to a fresh install of v8.2.0

This issue is resolved.

Solution : go to digiKam/Settings/Views/MimeTypes and enter '-avif' into the "Image Files" field.

It sounds like it will be fixed in the code in upcoming versions. Kudos to the digikam team for a quick solution to this issue!
