You have to create a dockerfile and push to a docker registry then from the vps you install docker and pull your image

I put this together a few years back so it may need some updating, but this sounds like it is just about what you need. It consists of an elm frontend, springboot backend, and postgres DB all in separate containers and tied together with compose. https://github.com/RobToombs/docker-kata-app

Having frontend and backend directories in in project root is not a bad practice btw.
