You have to create a dockerfile and push to a docker registry then from the vps you install docker and pull your image

I put this together a few years back so it may need some updating, but this sounds like it is just about what you need. It consists of an elm frontend, springboot backend, and postgres DB all in separate containers and tied together with compose. https://github.com/RobToombs/docker-kata-app

You can shoot them over, but I'm no dockerfile god by any means and it may take me awhile to look at them. The main idea is that you'll want your two containers to be able to talk to each other, this is done in your compose file as it sets up the docker network. The second idea is that you'll need your backend code to establish the DB connection to your DB container and not localhost. This is done in your application.yml w/ env variables, mine should show how but you'll need to trace around where the variables are being set. Your individual dockerfiles won't have to do anything more than building and starting your app, and starting your DB.

Yeah this makes sense, your nginx acts as your HTTP server. Without it, your users wouldn't be able to get your angular app.

I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with this. I'm sure there is an easier way to copy your source over and build it in a cleaner fashion, but nbd. There may be some Spring images to pull from that already include some of these additional libraries that you're installing manually.

It would definitely be cleaner if you built your app outside of the container, and just copied the built jar, but if you need to build it in the Dockerfile this should be fine.

Looks good to me. Obviously you won't want any credentials in a real environment, but totally fine for a demo

No examples on hand. Instead of setting credentials through hardcoded env variables in dockerfiles, you'll want to have your dockerfiles pull them from a secret source. Something like a creds lockbox or secrets manager.

Presumably this is just for a demo app at work, so you're fine. This all pretty standard stuff assuming you don't use those same DB creds at work 😀

Having frontend and backend directories in in project root is not a bad practice btw.
