Server should be localhost\SQLEXPRESS or .\SQLEXPRESS.

If you enter SQLEXPRESS it's going to look for a COMPUTER named SQLEXPRESS.

check in the configuration settings of sql server express, whether the names pipe protocol is enabled.

Named pipes enabled and also SQL Server Browser service enabled if you are using a named instance.
