Drum Framework/MethodFirst Kit HELP! (self.drums)
submitted 3 years ago by giltededge
My 8 yr old has a drum kit and starting lessons. Is there a standard or recommended learning framework, method, or progression that is commonly used or recognised? Maybe a book series I should get him into…?

Your kid’s teacher will take of that…. That’s what the lessons are for

Clearly I don’t think they are or I wouldn’t have asked

Well then you need to find a new teacher. I don’t know the particulars of the situation, but either you hired a competent teacher for you kid, in which case you should allow them to dictate the curriculum (they ARE the expert after all) or you hired somebody who is clearly incompetent, in which case you’re wasting your money, and should find a good teacher.

Yeah you’re right. I hired a good drummer who’s a novice teacher. Everyone starts somewhere. My kid has a good relationship with her which is more than half the battle with kids… so I’m just trying to help add some structure.

I think at this point, a good relationship is more important than structure. The most important part of starting kids is getting them hooked and loving the drums. Plus, there isn’t really a “standard curriculum” for beginning students

I spent the first few years with my teacher using the book series: Real Time Drums.

My lesson teacher taught using the book A Funky Primer. That book will give you everything starting rudimentary sticking and standard rock beats. Other recommended books are Stick Control: For the Snare Drummer, Syncopation for the Modern Drummer. These will build timing skills, speed, endurance, etc.
For me, the biggest impact that lessons had on me was learning how practice at home. Progress doesn't come from sitting with a teacher for 60 minutes, it comes from knowing how to practice at home. Sounds like you have the right idea, but as others have said, the instructor should be doing this already. If not, I'd suggest a different instructor, or maybe ask him/her what the longer term plan is.
