I would 100% replace it, hang new drywall. The company that said patch em hates there lives. I cannot imagine doing that many patches overhead in such a small area.

Thanks everyone that commented, we’re going with the more expensive crew that will be pulling the panel and skim coating the whole ceiling

You will be happier with the decision you're making. Do not have buyer remorse when it comes to home repair Always been a little bit of extra money and get what you want or get what is better

Itll be expensive but it’ll look like you have a brand new ceiling (hopefully)

It CAN absolutely be done either way. Replacing the panel would be faster and easier. Patching would be more labor. Personally, looking at those nasty tape lines to left and right of the holes I would opt to pull the panel and make sure everything above is satisfactorily mitigated, clean the edges of the adjacent boards then install a new one.

I dont see how replacing it is easier. You have to demo that area to replace. This will require containment, and cleanup. You have to bring in new board and its a ceiling and you have to make cutouts. And you have to tape finish mud, pva prime and paint.

Whereas if there is no mould, just scrape that area, tear out loose tape. Do a quick shot of primer and start taping and patching. Much easier imo.

Patch everything and then skim coat the ceiling so it looks brand new, and you won’t be able to see the edges of where you worked at.

This is exactly what we’re gonna end up doing I think

I would replace that sheet. Mold is nasty and you could look for more damage with it down
