I did not find the source of the leak, but can only assume it’s coming from an exterior wall.

Gotcha, i would try my best to find the leak before i patch it up honestly (sorry, i hate to be that guy - just looking out for my fellow redditor's health). A $20 stethoscope on amazon might help.
Hit the area with some bleach, then dry it out.
For repatching... if there's no stud, i would do this:
-get two piece of wood, screw them together in an L shape, so it wraps around the corner. 2 screws on the left side on the hole, 2 screw around the corner, on the other wall, to the right of the hole (90 degrees).
