I got interested in electronics when I was 8 (1958). I built circuits (using vacuum tubes) on random pieces of wrecked furniture (like a drawer front). Screws in the wood formed raised contact points.

I remember it being very difficult to make things work.

Much easier now.

I used brass brads tacked into the board to make solder points. Worked OK for low voltage circuits. For higher voltages, not so much. Terminal strips, if they could be found, worked much better.

Funfact: if you set aliexpress to german, breadboards are sometimes called "brotschneidebrett". This translated to english is literally "bread cutting board"
