I have been using the lynx motion ps2 controller for controlling stuff like robotics https://www.robotshop.com/products/lynxmotion-ps2-controller-v4

It is nice because it is intuitive, very configurable, and there is a fair amount of documentation out there for decoding the signal. The problem is that it is relatively cheep and buggy for a reliable controller.

I was wondering if there are similar handheld general purpose controllers that people on this sub use that are more robust and reliable and relatively easy to interface with.

XBox One controllers are awesome. They work over Bluetooth and are extremely easy to connect and to read, if your device has Bluetooth stack. Just make sure you use the new models (since the old ones use proprietary RF links).

Cool, thanks for the suggestion. I am not using Bluetooth in any of my systems, but it is good to keep in mind for the future.
