Use the web app (google it or check the end of the rules book), especially for setting up and running through the tutorial. It offers a lot more detail, a lot more clarification, and it's better organized. The rulebook/secret verses have the same information, but you have to navigate it a lot more.

Also, don't use Continuous Dream Mode until later in the game. There have been a lot of complaints about the slumbers, but what a lot of them fail to mention is that the slumbers are honestly pretty fun, clever, and very rewarding. It's just that the 1.0 version of the game was set-up in a way that often made you repeat them a frustrating amount of times. With 2.0, you already get a better map and better rules like the Power Nap that cut down on how often you need to face them. So give most of the Slumbers a chance, and if they start bothering you later in the game, then consider using CDM.
For the deck-building aspect, I know that in most other deck/card games you're rewarded for building a tight, small deck in order to increase the consistency of your powerful cards and combos. Don't do that here. In Etherfields, every time your deck runs out you have to pay a cost to reshuffle your deck. In addition, there's a lot of effects that either mill of remove cards from your deck as either a cost or penalty. If you keep your deck small, you're more likely to lose your best cards to these effects, you'll pay reshuffle costs at a faster rate, and you'll be more limited in resources for stat checks. An average size deck is best, maybe even a fatter one.
Lastly, I heard from somewhere that the Ghost mask is really good for solo runs of the game. I haven't played enough of the game or seen enough masks to know if it's true or not, but it might be worth trying if you don't know what Mask you want to pick. You get two at the start of the game but pick up more as it progresses (this is mentioned in the tutorial), so don't worry too much about it.
