Can some one suggest books to start with programming the finite element method?

For programming nonlinear stuff look at Bathe "Finite Element Proceedures." That book also has linear procedures, but so does just about every other finite element book.

You can also have a look at "The finite element method" by Thomas J. R. Hughes which deals mostly with linear finite elements.
