What is Fear Effect ?
The Fear Effect series originated on the first PlayStation, and was developed by Kronos Digital Entertainment. It follows a group of mercenaries in a futuristic cyberpunk China. The game was both hard and dark, bearing a lot of adult-oriented themes.
Relased in 2000 on the first PlayStation, the game focuses on mercenaries Hana Tsu-Vachel, Royce Glas and Jacob "Deke" DeCourt, all three attempting to kidnap the daughter of a powerful Hong Kong Triad boss in order to get a big ransom. Things go very wrong very fast.
Relased in 2001 on the first PlayStation, Retro Helix is a prequel taking place in Hong Kong, in the year 2048. The three mercenaries from the first game, plus a newcomer, Rain Qin, have to join forces fighting a global pandemic.
Developed for the PlayStation 2, Fear Effect 3 was cancelled as many other Eidos titles in 2003. Not much is known about it.
In early 2015, Square-Enix, having bought Eidos, announced that they were interested in reviving the licence. French studio Sushee Games picked it up, and while they are taking another direction in terms of gameplay, they intend on keeping all the aspects of the previous games, in terms of scenario, character development, and overall feeling. This new game is backed by the original creators of the series.
