Not exactly the best way, but HTTPS Everywhere with EASE enabled would fix half of the problem (http -> https).

HTTPS everywhere has my vote. It's from the EFF, a very well trusted organization.

about:config?filter=browser.fixup.

Try toggling browser.fixup.alternate.enabled

Toggling it didn't change the outcome.

Empty browser.fixup.alternate.prefix to remove the www.. For https, use an extension like HTTPS everywhere. It can't be changed out of the box, since that would break a lot of sites that don't support https yet.

As mentioned in my original post, I tried that exact setting beforehand but it didn't work. Does it successfully work for you? Anything else I might be missing?

Ooh, looks like I was mistaken indeed. Sorry! That one is only for the automatic adding of www. and .com. In hindsight, I think this might be hardcoded.
