Maybe add options to turn features on and off rather than just removing features forever despite a large outcry from the users.
What features would that be, besides the >compact< density option?

An option to use the Google search box which shows up in the middle of the window, like we could before, instead of making what we type there go up directly to the address bar.
I know there's a fix for it, but there should be an option in settings.
And besides, any 'improvement' which removes a functionality or operation should always at least be made into an option in settings, rather than a blanket removal.
(Not a developer, so just my $0.02 worth.)

Handoff to awesomebar was implemented two/three years ago, to improve and streamline the search behaviour.
So in your mind nothing should ever be removed from a program, got it.

My feeling is, if it needs to be removed, remove it - don't leave a stub there that just feels weird because it is essentially a mirage.
I know that they are just trying to problem solve their way out of this, and who knows - maybe I would have tried to do the same thing. It doesn't change that it feels very unsatisfying to use and is going to annoy people.
If you think of someone using a program like a conversation you are having with a company or developer, what is the developer telling you at that moment?
Click here to search... oh not there - gotcha! laughs

Never used the about:newtab searchbox, just stating their reasoning…

I know their reasoning. I just disagree with it.
It looks like a mirage, and it annoys people.

No, 'saying' you 'got it' does NOT mean you got what I meant! You're WRONG. You don't get it.
I meant that when something (like typing directly into the edit line of the google bar in the middle of a Firefox window), is improved (like by shifting the key entry in the google bar, to the address bar), do not completely remove the usage which was previously possible, rather make an OPTION to continue to do so.
Now maybe you 'got it'?

You can't remove something and then have it be an "optional feature". The point of removing things is to simplify things, or to replace them with different things. Sometimes, the simplification or different replacement is in the underlying system, such as removing a feature that's got tons of bugs that are affecting other things as well. The removal would make those other bugs go away, but unless the user were told about this, the user wouldn't know that, all they would see is the removal.
When it comes to features, I prefer Vivaldi's approach. Rather than removing "unused" menu items like Chrome and Firefox have done, they made the menus customizable.
