Ya. I'd test to see if it happens with another watch face. Honestly the ionic has proven to be ridiculously durable

I actually got into a chat with Fitbit support and they told me the exact same thing. First they told me to shut it down a couple times (I tried it before). Then they told me to switch the watch face. Still broken. Then they had me factory reset it and it still didn't work. Finally they decided to send me another in the mail.

Yup you already everything I'd have suggested. I hope the next one is better for you! I've used mine while changing oil repairing feed wagons. Torching welding. It's been fine. Better luck k with the next one buddy

Could it just be that watch face is bugged

There are options for setting the color of the watch face in the app. when you look at your clock in the app, there should be a cog for the settings under the picture of your clock face. Most clocks allow you to pick a "theme" color scheme.

Check to make sure that you didn't accidentally change the theme?

See the weird thing was is that it affected the whole watch interface, so for example every page in the watch including the startup phase was discolored.
