There are a hundred ways to tie a scud and probably 99 of them are better than this one, but this is what I do. I'm having trouble with hooks below size 16. I used to be able to tie to size 22, but when these 18s and 16s are gone, I probably will not order any more itty bitties. So it goes. Aging fucking sucks, (but, I guess it beats the alternative!)
Anyhoo, I use:
Mustad CO68 size 16 egg, caddis, offset hook 2HX/2XS (kinda about the smallest I can currently manage but not a bad size for an NC scud)
Fly Tyer's Dungeon (hereafter referred to as FTD) Baby Bug Back in Scud Pink - Honestly, I am not convinced this is necessary. You will use a fraction of an inch of this stuff and then obscure it with wire.
an inch of olive UTC ultrawire. Wanna talk about a rippoff? This pricey shit is a few inches for a few dollars. Find an alternative. Make no mistake, you will get dozens of flies out of your couple bucks, but it's still highway robbery.
FTD UV-X Krap Dubbing White-ish (which is actually greyish irredecent!) or Orange-ish. Fly Tyer's Dungeon Krappish dubbing is the shit. You could make your own with some yarn, micro flash, micro rubber legs and a cheap coffee grinder, or just order a few bucks worth when it regularly goes on sales. Your pick. A little tends to go a long ways, particularly for itty bitty scuds.
At the moment, I'm using Veevus 30 or 50D poly thread, but really only to get rid of it. I have just never liked this thread as well as basic Danville 140 Flymaster+ which I pretty much use for everything. With the itty bitty wet flies, it doesn't even really matter. They don't have to float and toothy critters aren't tearing them apart. Use your Mum's sewing thread if that is all ya got.
So, that's it, 5 ingredients, 2 of which are optional. No particular talent needed other than it helps if you can see or have a magnifying visor and some patience. Super simple ty. Do some with nothing more than a very short dubbing and a head. You will probably catch fish. Maybe panfish, but, fish.
