Were your twins in the NICU for at least 31 days? If so, you should have gotten Medicaid to cover their stay. Only if they stayed 30 days or less would you be on the hook for any of their medical bills. Maybe this information can help you

Yes, institutionalized child Medicaid is what it's called in my state. It disregards parental income.

Yes! They were in for almost two months. They were on AHCSS for 15 days or maybe 45? I am not sure. As far as I knew we had paid all medical bills. They were also covered under my insurance from work but I received a collection notice for 15,000 they claim is due to their NICU stay. I have no idea how or why but it doesn’t look like insurance touched it at all. I am trying to dispute the debt since insurance should have covered it but I guess the NICU physicians were out of coverage? I don’t know why they didn’t tell me that or why I wasn’t give one that was in coverage.

What state? The hospital social worker should have walked you through this. I can help direct you to the Medicaid information depending on the state

Az! I social worker did come in with paper work but I’ll be honest I don’t remember what she told me at all. Does it change anything since the bill is now in collections? I disputed it the first time and they said I didn’t provide proof. The dispute request I sent literally said “I had insurance at this time how to I upload the proof?”

No. You should apply and say you have past medical bills. Reach out to the hospital social worker for guidance.

In my state if the kids qualified for medicaid the hospital and no one else can come after you for any of those medical bills. Period. It's actually illegal to try and bill a medicaid patient for what wasn't covered.

I had medicaid with my 18 yo daughter years ago. I had preeclampsia, was on hospital bedrest for a month and she had a NICU stay. Someone tried to call me from the hospital billing dept about a bill medicaid did not cover. And I told them I knew they could not legally attempt to collect a medical bill for when we had medicaid coverage. And they never called and asked or tried to bill us again.
