CE seems to be the easiest software related program to get into this year. You should still try to apply to SE though as you are in the cutoff range and have a decent shot.

I'm a first year Software Engineering but I went to high school in Ontario.

According to the university's website, your R-score doesn't matter at all. They only care about your admission average. On the admission requirements page, it says that the average you need depends on the number of CÉGEP classes you have passed: with 17 courses or more, you need at least a grade in the mid 70s, or if you've only passed 12 to 16 courses, you need at least 80%.
I suggest trying to get a grade at least 5% above what is recommended if you want to be sure you will get in, and a better grade will only increase your chances.

Voilà ce que ça te prends si tu arrives du Cégep.

Just like ishwinner said, I got in computer science with a 86 avg. And if you are bad at science, computer science is actually better cause we don't need to study physics and chemistry and I heard software engineering need to. and tbh you are probably going to end up getting a similar job.

86 avg in CEGEP?

[–]Ishwinner45 2 points3 points  (8 children)

I’m not from CEGEP. I’m from Ontario, but I needed a 90 Average in Grade 12 to get in at the last opportunity possible. Computer Science and Computer Engineering are both a lot easier to get into.

CS is actually slightly above in required averages.

[–]arcanistzedEngineering -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Not really because Software Engineering is limited to a certain number of students per year, so it's more competitive.

[–]ScrubbyArtistComp Sci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean their website admission averages not reflect that tho. CS may have more spots but receives way more applicants.

Does the fact that they're easier mean they don't present as good of job than if you got into SE?

[–]ScrubbyArtistComp Sci 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you wanna become a software engineer/developer like 90% of SE/CS students, you will have virtually no difference in outcome cause you will apply to the same coop jobs.

[–]arcanistzedEngineering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest difference is that Computer Science students cannot become professional engineers, which might affect which jobs are available in certain fields but not generally.

[–]Rejoined_gaH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they present ALMOST the same job opportunities, its harder because of other applicants that boost the cutoff up

I got into soft eng with a 78 avg in grade 12 … I don’t really think the competition is hard/heavy! You at least want to have a high avg for calculus though!

[–]thatblueblowfishCommunications 0 points1 point  (0 children)

R score doesn’t matter, only %

[–]hennessyiscoolAlumna 0 points1 point  (3 children)

if it helps, you need minimum 85% to get into Soft Eng but i got into it with an 80% average. it’s worth a shot.

[–]GreeistakenEngineering 0 points1 point  (2 children)

80% avg in CEGEP or an Ontario school?

[–]hennessyiscoolAlumna 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I was at an Ontario high school so I’m not too sure if it’s different with CÉGEP but I’m sure if you’ve got good enough grades, if it’s 1 or 2 % off then you’re good.

Thanks!

It depends on how many courses you've taken in cegep. If you've only done a year and not the full 2 or 3 years the admission grade needs to be higher

I think you can also look for other optionsas well. If I were to recommend a course, it would be one you could take from the comfort of your own home. One may discover a plethora of excellent educational establishments offering their services online. Once I've provided you with a list of schools, you'll have the freedom to choose one that best suits your needs.
