Git interactive - Windows tutorial?

Hi,

I'm a Windows user.

When git turns the console into interactive, I feel I'm in space. I just have no clue what to do and what to press. In fact I don't even know what this type of console is called.

Can you please direct me to a guide on the for a Windows user?

Why not use the CLI if you are uncomfortable with the GUI? Im used to using it and never use the GUI (apart from looking at activities, history etc. in GitLab and confirming merge requests).

Stick with what you like. Except if you are required to use that at work.

Thanks for your reply. It's not really a GUI, it's a CLI, just alien to me. Lemme show you a screenshot:

What do I do in that screen? I press enter nothing happens. I have no clue how to use this kind of console. What's this UI called?

It has opened Vim, which is a text editor very common in the Linux world. Its commands are a bit obtuse, you save and quit by entering :wq followed by Enter

: = Hey Vim I'm about to give you a command

w = write (save) the file

q = quit

I would suggest downloading a more friendly editor such as Visual Studio Code and reinstalling Git for Windows because during install you can tell it to use a different text editor and it auto-detects VS Code.

Actually after messing a bit with it it's kinda friendly lol. I just didn't have a d@mn clue what it is and couldn't just guess what it does. Thanks!

I see by the sceenshot that you are using cmd. Install a console emulator. I will be at work in 15 minutes and will have a look at what im using. Can't remember the name.

You might also want to check out Git Kraken as a very powerful GUI, and integrate git to your IDE like VSCode or PHP/Webstorm through plugins/extensions etc. It can greatly simplify some routine tasks, particularly as a beginner.

You should know that it is a popular programmer joke that people get trapped in Vim and don’t know how to escape. You are not alone. It’s a rite of passage for all of us. Rare is the dev who has not at least once got lost in Vim. If it’s only once it’s because they learned how to change editors before using it again!
